Death Row Inmate Says He Picked the Wrong Victim
“I picked the wrong person.” That’s what Nebraska death row inmate Aubrey Trail said about the 2017 murder of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe, in recordings for Hulu’s new docuseries “Swipe Right on the Devil.”
Loofe, a store clerk from Neligh, Nebraska, met Bailey Boswell on Tinder in November 2017, where Boswell went by “Audrey.” Prosecutors say Loofe was killed on Nov. 15, 2017, the night of their second date, at the Wilber apartment Boswell shared with Trail. Prosecutors said Trail strangled her with an electrical cord, then dismembered her body and left the remains in ditches along rural roads.
Loofe’s best friend, Brooklyn McCrystal, helped crack the case. She made her own Tinder profile, matched with “Audrey,” and handed the number to police. Investigators traced it from a burner phone to hotel video showing Boswell with Trail. The couple was arrested near Branson, Missouri, on Nov. 30, 2017, and Loofe’s remains were found days later.
Trail was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy in 2019 and sentenced to death in 2021. Boswell was convicted in 2020 and sentenced to life without parole. She has said Trail controlled and manipulated her.
Now, Trail says he doesn’t regret the killing, filmmaker Christopher St. John told Fox News Digital. St. John believes Trail meant he wished he’d chosen someone without a strong network of family and friends, the same network that led police to his door. Trail has given shifting accounts over the years, and witnesses testified he claimed to be a warlock who gained “powers” through killing.
Trail remains on death row at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, and no upcoming court date has been reported. Loofe’s arm bore a tattoo that read “Everything will be wonderful someday.”
