Georgia Mom Charged After Leaving Infant at Jiffy Lube
A Georgia mom allegedly wheeled her 6-month-old into a Jiffy Lube, asked the employees if her baby was cute, and then walked away. When she came back, police say, she had a knife.
Laraven Davis, 35, was arrested Saturday, Oct. 24, at a Jiffy Lube on Floyd Road in Mableton. She is charged with child abandonment and reckless conduct, both reported as misdemeanors.
Assistant manager Jarayya Mayes says Davis left the baby in a stroller at the service bay, told staff she had somewhere to go, and said the paperwork was in the bag. Then, Mayes says, Davis told them they could just keep the baby if she didn’t make it back. “Once she said that, red flags immediately,” Mayes said.
Employees called 911 as soon as Davis left. Minutes later, while Mayes was still on the phone with dispatch, Davis allegedly returned with a knife, demanding the baby, according to TrueCrimeNews. Dispatchers had told staff not to let her leave with the child.
Police say the baby was in soiled clothes and had multiple rashes but was in overall good health. She was taken to a hospital and placed in the custody of Georgia’s Division of Family and Children Services. “As a mom, it broke me down, I did cry a lot,” Mayes said.
Police haven’t said why Davis left her daughter or why she came back armed. She was last reported held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, and no court date has been set. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
