Why Was This Product Recalled?
The company says the bar can rapidly hydrate into a dense, dry and sticky mass with saliva and chewing, a potential choking hazard for toddlers aged 1.5 to 2.5 years. It cites three consumer choking complaints reported to the FDA and says no injuries have been reported to date. The FDA advisory describes it as a "potentially fatal choking hazard" and says it received "several reports" of toddlers with complete airway obstruction. It adds that back blows and the Heimlich maneuver may fail to dislodge the mass, and that some incidents needed emergency response and hospital observation.
What Should You Do?
The FDA advisory says not to buy or serve the bars and to throw them away immediately. The company says not to open or eat them, and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or email care@uponafarm.com. You can also call the company at 1-888-983-1606, Monday to Friday 6:00 am to 4:30 pm PST, or Saturday 8:00 am to 11:00 am PST. The FDA says to call 9-1-1 if someone is choking and other first aid has failed, and that anyone with symptoms should contact a health care provider.
