A new wave of space heaters and portable fan units sold at major retailers including TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Depot, and on Amazon are being recalled in 2025 and 2026 for catching fire — and many owners have no idea their product is on the list. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued recalls against multiple brands for fire and electric shock hazards, including units that have already caught fire in consumers’ homes.
Recently Recalled Products
- Merkury Innovations Hot + Cool Heating and Cooling Fans (sold at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Sierra stores from October 2024 through October 2025 for about $30) — the fan can overheat and catch fire when connected to a power source. Two reports of the fan catching fire have been received, including one with smoke damage to property. Consumers should stop using the fan immediately, unplug and cut the cord, and upload a photo to merkuryinnovations.com/pages/fanrecall for a full refund.
- GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters (multiple models sold on Amazon) — recalled for fire and burn hazards. Consumers should immediately stop use and contact Govee for a refund.
- Vornado VH2 Whole Room Heaters (sold at Kohl’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, ACE Hardware, and Amazon from August 2013 through May 2026) — recalled for electric shock and fire hazards.
General Space Heater Safety Tips
Regardless of whether your heater has been recalled, CPSC urges all space heater users to follow these rules at all times:
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn — beds, sofas, curtains, and clothing.
- Turn space heaters off completely before going to sleep or leaving the room.
- Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip.
- Only use a space heater with an automatic shutoff feature that activates if the unit tips over.
- Check SaferProducts.gov to verify whether your space heater brand and model has been recalled.
