Nevada Man Charged With Murder in 2021 Shooting
A Nevada man who said for years that he shot a man in self-defense has been arrested on a murder warrant in the 2021 killing, and his attorney says he is wrongly accused.
Boulder City police arrested John Powell Morgan III, 40, on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at a car dealership in Henderson. The warrant charges him with one count of open murder with use of a deadly weapon.
The charge stems from the May 31, 2021, shooting of Scott Dingman, 40, in the roadway of Fairway Drive near Pueblo Drive in Boulder City. The Clark County coroner ruled Dingman's death a homicide, with gunshot wounds to the chest and groin.
Morgan admitted shooting Dingman but told police he did so in self-defense, saying Dingman punched him in the face and drew a gun after a night of heavy drinking. Boulder City police determined at the time that the shooting was self-defense, and no charges were filed.
Police say they received new information in 2025. In April 2025, detectives searching Morgan's home for digital evidence related to the shooting found more than 25 grams of cocaine and signs of drug dealing, and seized 40 firearms. Morgan was later indicted on drug charges in that case. Police say the investigation continued into 2026 and led to probable cause for the murder arrest.
Dingman's family has accused Boulder City police of mishandling the original investigation, and a federal civil rights lawsuit over the case is pending. The arrest follows more than a year of reporting on the case by KTNV's 13 Investigates.
Justice of the Peace Gregor Mills set bail at $1 million at a hearing on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. Morgan's attorney, Louis Schneider, says Morgan is wrongly accused, that the case is full of conflicts of interest and that multiple law enforcement agencies previously concluded the shooting was self-defense. Morgan is presumed innocent, and the date of his next court appearance has not been reported.
