South Carolina Man, 69, Charged in 2017 Stabbing Death
A 69-year-old Charleston, South Carolina, man has been arrested and charged with murder in the 2017 stabbing death of a man found in his Johns Island apartment, and police say he was among the people detectives interviewed when the case was first investigated.
Charleston police arrested Henry James Brisbane on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, and charged him with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is being held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.
Harry Bennett, 64, was found dead in his apartment at the Johns Island Rural Housing Complex on Aug. 20, 2017, after a neighbor knocked on his door and got no answer. Police found him in a chair with multiple stab wounds. Detectives interviewed numerous people during the original investigation, including Brisbane, but the case went cold.
Earlier this year, detectives revisited the case with the department's Forensic Services Division and its DNA technical leader and identified several additional items of evidence suitable for analysis. Police say DNA results from those items linked Brisbane to the crime scene and led to his arrest more than nine years after Bennett's death.
"We hope this arrest brings a measure of closure to the victim's family and reinforces our commitment to pursuing justice, regardless of how much time has passed," Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker said. Bennett's son Michael Simmons told ABC News 4 the arrest has brought him some peace.
No bond amount or next court date has been reported, and no attorney for Brisbane has commented publicly. Brisbane is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
