Tennessee Funeral Home Owner Indicted on 52 Counts, Accused of Filing Death Claims for Living People and Mishandling Remains
A Tennessee funeral home owner has been indicted on 52 counts following an investigation into allegations that he mishandled human remains and defrauded grieving families, and authorities say some of the people he allegedly claimed had died were still very much alive.
Chadrick "Chad" Mundy, 37, owns Mundy Funeral Home in Jamestown. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation opened a probe into the business in May at the request of 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler, looking into allegations of theft and fraud.
In August, the State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers suspended the licenses of both Mundy and his funeral home, declaring the business an immediate risk to the public's health, safety, and welfare. The board found Mundy had allegedly filed false life insurance claims for people who were still living, including his own wife. Investigators say the insurance company reported that the funeral home had filed death claims for at least five people who were still alive.
The TBI's investigation went further, finding that Mundy had also allegedly mishandled cremated remains and financially exploited elderly clients.
For some families, the alleged misconduct hit at the worst possible time. One family said their relative's cremated remains weren't returned for 51 days. "We had talked about how she didn't have a burial policy, and [Mundy] had suggested that, in lieu of flowers, donations toward the funeral expenses would be an option... So we chose to do that," said Amy Stockton, whose mother-in-law's remains were delayed. She said the funeral home later sent the family a refund check that bounced.
On Sept. 23, a Fentress County grand jury returned a 52-count indictment against Mundy. The charges include 15 counts of theft of property over $2,500, five counts of theft over $1,000, four counts of theft under $1,000, 12 counts of fraudulent insurance acts, nine counts of financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult, four counts of abuse of a corpse, two counts of criminal simulation, and one count of worthless checks.
Mundy was arrested the same day and booked into the Fentress County Jail, where he's being held on $80,000 bond.
