Build-A-Bear Workshop Recalls 36,000 Heartwarming Hugs Bears Over Zipper Slider Choking Hazard

Build-A-Bear Workshop has recalled approximately 36,000 Heartwarming Hugs weighted plush bears sold in the United States after the zipper slider on the bear’s side pouch was found to detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. The recall was announced April 30, 2026. No injuries have been reported in the United States. One consumer in the United Kingdom reported the zipper slider detaching during use.

What’s Being Recalled?

The recalled product is the Build-A-Bear Workshop Heartwarming Hugs Bear, model number 134464, UPC code 000000134464. The model number is located on a label sewn into the back of one of the bear’s legs. The bear is a large weighted plush with a side pouch containing a heart filled with 2.5 pounds of ceramic beads that can be heated in the microwave or cooled in the freezer for comfort use. The side pouch is secured with a zipper. The product is intended for ages 3 and up. Approximately 36,000 units were sold at Build-A-Bear Workshop stores and online at buildabear.com in the United States between January 2026 and March 2026 for about $48.

Why Was This Product Recalled?

The zipper slider securing the side pouch can detach from the zipper during use, releasing a small metal component that poses a choking hazard to young children. Although the bear is rated for ages 3 and up, small detached parts can be swallowed by young children — potentially causing choking, serious injury, or death. One report of zipper slider detachment was received from a consumer in the United Kingdom. No injuries have been reported. Build-A-Bear identified the issue and proactively initiated the recall in cooperation with the CPSC.

What Should You Do?

Stop allowing children to use the recalled Heartwarming Hugs Bear immediately. Take the bear to any Build-A-Bear Workshop retail location to receive a full refund in the form of original payment or a gift card for the original purchase price, redeemable toward any available merchandise. If you are unable to return the bear to a store, visit buildabear.com/recalls or contact Build-A-Bear to request a free prepaid return shipping label and receive a refund check or digital gift card.
