Fontanini Foods LLC is recalling approximately 2,320 pounds of raw, frozen pork breakfast sausage that may contain pieces of clear, hard plastic. The company is based in McCook, Illinois, and is part of Hormel Foods Corp. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall in late September 2026. The recalled Fontanini Pork Sausage Links were shipped to distributors for restaurants and other food service kitchens, which means diners may have been served the sausage while eating out.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers 10-pound cardboard cases of Fontanini Pork Sausage Links produced on June 23, 2026. The affected cases have “ITEM 393” printed on the box and “PACKED ON 06/23/2026” printed on the shipping label. They also bear establishment number EST. 6944 inside the USDA mark of inspection. FSIS says the product was shipped to distributors in California, Florida, Michigan, and Nevada. The company says 232 cases are included in the recall and no other Fontanini products are affected.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The problem came to light after the company received two customer complaints about clear, hard plastic found in the sausage. Hard plastic pieces can cause choking or injure the mouth, teeth, or throat if swallowed. The company describes this as a Class I recall, the most serious level. That classification means there is a reasonable chance that eating the product could cause serious health problems. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injury or adverse reactions.
What Should You Do?
This sausage was sold only to food service customers and is not available in grocery stores. FSIS is urging restaurants and other food service operators not to serve the recalled product and to either throw it away or return it to their supplier. The company says it has notified all customers who received the affected product. If you recently ate breakfast sausage at a restaurant and are concerned about an injury, contact a healthcare provider.
