Horizon Organic Recalls Over 63,000 Cartons Of Chocolate Milk In Four States

Horizon Organic has voluntarily recalled more than 63,000 cartons of Horizon Organic Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk after identifying a packaging integrity issue that may cause the cartons to bloat, leak, or spoil prematurely. Horizon Organic initially recalled the product on March 11, 2026. The FDA formally classified the recall as Class II on May 5, 2026. No illnesses have been reported. The recall is limited to four states: Arizona, California, Nevada, and Oregon. No other Horizon Organic products are affected.

What’s Being Recalled?

The recall covers 6-packs and 18-packs of Horizon Organic Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk, sold in 8-ounce shelf-stable cartons labeled “1% Lowfat DHA Omega-3 Chocolate Milk.” Item number 136518 and UPC code 742365004322 appear on both individual cartons and on the outer case. The affected cartons carry best-by dates of August 14, 2026, or August 15, 2026. Only these specific best-by dates are included in the recall. The product was distributed at retail locations in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Oregon.

Why Was This Product Recalled?

The recall is due to a packaging integrity issue in a specific production run. The compromised packaging may cause affected cartons to bloat, leak, or experience premature spoilage — meaning the contents may have an unpleasant taste, odor, or texture before the printed best-by date. The FDA’s Class II designation indicates the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, but temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects are possible. Shelf-stable milk cartons rely on hermetically sealed packaging to maintain safety without refrigeration — when that seal is compromised, the contents can spoil before the printed date. These multipacks are commonly purchased for school lunches and kids’ snacks. Corrective and preventive actions have been implemented to prevent recurrence.

What Should You Do?

Check any Horizon Organic Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk cartons in your home for best-by dates of August 14 or August 15, 2026, and item number 136518. If your product matches, do not consume it. Throw the product away and retain your proof of purchase and packaging information. Contact Horizon Organic‘s Consumer Relations team at 1-888-494-3020, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, for refund eligibility. More information is available at horizon.com/update.
