Why Was This Product Recalled?
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets identified the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the recalled seafood product. Cold smoked fish is a particularly high-risk product category for Listeria because the fish is not cooked before consumption and Listeria can survive in refrigerated environments. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly people, and immunocompromised individuals. In pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and life-threatening infection in newborns. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
