United Sugar Producers and Refiners of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million pounds of light brown sugar and powdered sugar products after discovering possible wheat kernel contamination in certain batches. The recall was initiated August 19, 2026, and classified Class II by the FDA on September 26, 2026. No illnesses have been reported. The recalled products were distributed across Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
What’s Being Recalled?
Five products are included across multiple brands, covering approximately 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar:
United Light Brown Sugar — various sizes
Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar — consumer bags
United 6X Powdered Sugar — various sizes
Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar — various sizes
Good & Gather Powdered Sugar — consumer bags
Affected batches carry lot numbers ranging from MHD26223 through MHD26229, with some powdered sugar products carrying different lot-specific identifiers. Both consumer-sized 2-pound bags and commercial 25-pound and 50-pound packages are included. Important note: Although Good & Gather is a Target private-label brand, Target has confirmed that no affected inventory reached its stores. Customers who purchased Good & Gather sugar at Target do not need to take any action.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
United Sugar Producers and Refiners discovered possible wheat kernel contamination in the recalled sugar batches. Wheat is one of the nine major food allergens under federal law. Consumers purchasing plain brown sugar or powdered sugar would not expect wheat to be present, meaning individuals with wheat allergies or celiac disease would have no way to identify the risk from the label. Reactions to undeclared wheat can range from mild hives and digestive discomfort to severe anaphylaxis requiring emergency treatment. Bakeries, food manufacturers, restaurants, and other businesses using bulk sugar should also review inventory and supplier records.
What Should You Do?
Check any light brown sugar or powdered sugar purchased recently for the brand names and batch codes listed above. Do not use the recalled products if you or anyone in your household has a wheat allergy or celiac disease. Return recalled products to the place of purchase for a full refund, or safely discard them. Do not give recalled products to others. Contact United Sugar Producers and Refiners at 1-800-984-3585 for additional assistance.
