Wakefern Food Corp. of Keasbey, New Jersey, has voluntarily recalled select containers of Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after routine FDA testing identified elevated patulin levels that exceed food safety limits. The recall was published by the FDA on September 22, 2026. No illnesses or injuries have been reported. The recalled product was sold through Wakefern supermarket banners including ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market.
What’s Being Recalled?
The recall covers Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce in 23-ounce plastic jar containers with UPC code 04119005677. Only jars with a best-by date of June 16, 2027 are included. The best-by date is printed on the lid. No other Wholesome Pantry or Wakefern products are affected.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The FDA’s routine product monitoring detected elevated levels of patulin in the recalled apple sauce. Patulin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin — a chemical compound produced by certain molds — that can grow on damaged or bruised apples and make its way into apple-based products. The FDA sets limits on the amount of patulin permitted in apple juice and apple products because elevated exposure to patulin over time is associated with potential health concerns including nausea, vomiting, and at high levels, immune toxicity. The levels detected in this product exceed what the FDA considers acceptable for food safety.
