D&M Smoked Fish Inc. dba Haifa Smoked Fish Inc. of Queens, NY is recalling approximately 560 lbs. of Cold Smoked Sprats because of possible contamination with Clostridium botulinum. The FDA also notes it does not endorse the product or the company.
What's Being Recalled?
The recalled product is Cold Smoked Sprats, also described as Cold Smoked Sprat Fish. The fish was packed loose in bulk cardboard boxes labeled "Cold Smoked Sprats" and shipped refrigerated. It was distributed through retail stores in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The FDA page does not name specific retailers, and it lists no brand name, UPC, best-by date or price. According to the company, all lots are included in the recall.
Why Was This Product Recalled?
The FDA says Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that can cause life-threatening illness. An FDA inspection of D&M Smoked Fish Inc. found the firm was producing cold-smoked sprats without the required food safety controls to prevent Clostridium botulinum growth and toxin formation. Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Symptoms include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, difficulty breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation. The FDA says anyone with these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
What Should You Do?
Consumers who bought Cold Smoked Sprats are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The FDA says not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
